What is a Gastric Balloon?

The 6 and 12-month gastric balloons help you lose weight quickly in the same way. A gastric balloon procedure suppresses your appetite by temporarily taking up space in your stomach and reducing the production of ghrelin, the hunger hormone.

On average, our patients will lose 10-18% of their body weight, with the help of our dietitian’s lifestyle and diet advice. The gastric balloon is a weight loss tool that helps you make changes to your lifestyle allowing you to lose weight quickly and effectively.

Common Gastric Balloon Side Effects

In the first few days after placement, most patients will feel unwell. We recommend taking a little time off work in order to accommodate the process of your body adjusting to life with the balloon.

These short-term side effects include vomiting, nausea, and stomach cramps. You may be prescribed medication to help alleviate this as much as possible.

Gastric Balloon Eligibility Requirements

The Food and Drug administration (FDA) recently increased the minimum BMI eligibility for gastric balloons from 27 BMI to 30 BMI.

Certain medical conditions and or treatments can rule you out for a gastric balloon, for example any form of previous bariatric surgery and Crohn’s disease would make you ineligible, to name a couple. Our team of Orbera 365 and BIB gastric balloon specialists will be able to discuss this with you in further detail.

Our GMC Registered Consultants

Balloon placement in the UK is undertaken by handpicked consultant surgeons. You will be assigned a specialist surgeon depending on the location of your placement. All our consultants are selected because they are at the top of their field.

Gastric Balloon FAQs

A gastric balloon is a non-surgical and short-term (temporary) weight loss device. A smooth, soft saline-filled balloon (about the size of an grapefruit) is placed in your stomach, allowing you to control your portion sizes by filling space in your stomach. By following professional health and wellness advice, you can adopt good, healthy eating habits and change your lifestyle so you can lose weight quickly and keep it off long term.

Gastric balloons have been used in the management of obesity for over 20 years. Over this time they have evolved in shape, size, and design resulting in a modern, durable product, which is now well established as a safe weight loss procedure. Over 300,000 ORBERA® balloons have been placed worldwide.

Once in place, the gastric balloon is filled with saline to partially fill the stomach so that they may consume smaller portions of food. Most weight is lost in the first three months, but because the gastric balloon stays in for six months, you will learn the right amount of food to eat to maintain your new weight long term.

It is very likely that the presence of the balloon in the stomach will cause nausea or vomiting after placement. In some patients it may last one to two weeks. Your consultant surgeon may prescribe medication to help minimise these potential effects. Patients will need to immediately contact their physician for any severe or unusual symptoms.

The most widely used measurement for obesity. The BMI approximates body mass using a mathematical ratio of weight and height [(weight in kg ÷ height in meters) or (weight in pounds ÷ height in inches x 703)]. A BMI of 30 or more is regarded by most health agencies as the threshold for obesity. A BMI of 40 or more generally qualifies as morbid obesity. However, note that BMI measurements in body-builders and athletes may not be accurate determinants of obesity because the BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat.
